TARIK FRIMPONG

Advocacy

Advocacy and activism has always been an integral part of Tarik’s work. Growing up as a young Black, Mixed-Race performer in Melbourne Australia, Tarik watched and experienced first hand the effects of an industry that was, and still is, lacking in racial diversity.

Through his creative work and activism Tarik endeavours to uplift and empower all artists of colour, with an additional focus on, and support for, Black performers and artists.

In 2020, Tarik founded the Artist Of Colour Initiative (AOC).

What is AOC?

A musical theatre scholarship program, that provides financial assistance and industry support to exceptionally talented theatre performers based in Australia, that identify as Bla(c)k, Indigenous and/or People Of Colour.

What has AOC achieved?

In 2020 alone, AOC raised over 30,000 AUD in financial assistance and over 120,000 AUD in scholarships.

Many of the 2020 AOC Semi-finalists have gone on to land roles in theatre productions and TV shows such as: Hamilton, Moulin Rouge, Phantom Of The Opera, Jagged Little Pill, Home and many more.

The deep north

In 2021 Tarik purchased and donated tickets, to the premiere season of the critically acclaimed, African-Australian musical, ‘The Deep North’.

These tickets were donated to members of the African Australian and Indigenous communities. For some of whom, this was their first experience of musical theatre.
